Exploring the 5 volcanoes in Rwanda with Amahoro Tours – The Mt. Bisoke Volcano
In this series, I will highlight my experience hiking the 5 volcanoes in Rwanda.

Bisoke Mountain is one of Rwanda’s five majestic volcanoes found in the northwestern region of the country within Volcanoes National Park. Rising to approximately 3,711m (12,175 ft), Bisoke draws adventurers with its famous crater lake at the summit and lush slopes teeming with diverse flora and fauna. This dormant stratovolcano has played a pivotal role in mountain gorilla conservation, most notably through the research efforts of Dian Fossey.
A trek to Bisoke typically begins at the park headquarters in Kinigi with a briefing at 7am, where visitors meet guides and porters before driving to the trailhead. The steep, muddy paths wind through bamboo forests, Hagenia woodlands, and vibrant moorland, showcasing Rwanda’s incredible biodiversity at every turn. Hikers can expect a moderate to challenging climb of 4-6 hours, with the summit’s breathtaking crater lake as the ultimate reward. On a clear day, panoramic views stretch across the rolling hills of Rwanda into neighboring Uganda, highlighting the area’s dramatic volcanic landscape. I would recommend you hike during the dry season, it is a little less slippery than during the rainy season, but the weather here changes in an instant.

Beyond its natural allure, Bisoke’s conservation significance cannot be overstated. Trekking fees contribute directly to preserving the mountain gorillas’ habitat, supporting dedicated park rangers, and funding community initiatives that benefit local families. By hiring porters and respecting wildlife guidelines, visitors help ensure that Bisoke remains a harmonious haven for both people and animals. For those seeking a one-of-a-kind adventure in Rwanda’s high-altitude wonderland, climbing Mount Bisoke is an experience unlike any other.
Tips: Carry your favorite snacks with you.
