Tours

We believe in individual tours that are entirely tailored to suit the needs and desires of our guests. Possible visits range from an active adventure trip with a mainly natural focus to a study trip in order to experience the life and the culture of the Rwandan people. As long as your ideas and requests correspond to our goals of conservation and community development, we are always open to your suggestions, and aim at offering you the most intimate and personal experience possible. Potential visitors can choose from a wide variety of activities, and together we will plan an individual itinerary to incorporate all desired elements.

Discovering Rwanda – Nature, Life and People (14 days) 

Day 1:
Arrival in Kigali – getting to know your tour guide – walk in Kigali

Day 2:
Drive to Ruhengeri in the north – first impressions of Rwanda, the “Land of a Thousand Hills” – tour around the lively and friendly town centre – visit to the clay fields of a group of brick makers – traditional dinner and cultural performance of a local dance group

Day 3:
Trekking in the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park and visit to one of the last mountain gorilla families in the world, one of the absolute highlights in the lives of many nature lovers – optional visit to a group of local beekeepers

Day 4:
Visit to the beautiful region of the twin Lakes Burera and Ruhondo – introduction to traditional sustainable farming methods with African vegetables and fruits – visit to local fishermen – fishing competition with children from the adjacent villages – lake cruise in one of the shaky traditional canoes – visit to the convent “Foyer de Charité” – visit to the local witch doctors and the “snake man”

Day 5:
Drive to Gisenyi at the northern shores of Lake Kivu – visit to a tea plantation – shopping at a farmers’ market – cooking in hot springs at the shore of Lake Kivu – swimming and relaxing at sandy beaches and a palm-shaded beach promenade

Day 6:
Boat trip to Gishamwana Island – visit to a coffee plantation – enjoying life at the lake which is surrounded by breathtaking scenery with banana plantations and terraced hills optional African party or romantic evening at the lake

Day 7:
If the security situation is adequate, trip across the border to Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo – tour of the city which repeatedly gained tragic publicity in the past decade because of enormous refugee camps, hunger, epidemics and, recently, a devastating volcanic eruption that reminded of the fate of the historic town of Pompeii – boat trip to Kibuye at the eastern shores of Lake Kivu

Day 8:
Tour of the town centre of Kibuye and visit to a large church which serves as a peaceful reminder of the genocide – if possible encounter with survivors of the genocide – discovery tour on the lake with exploration of the lake’s flora and fauna – visit to the islands “Napoleon’s Hat” and “Amahoro” (Island of Peace)

Day 9:
Boat trip to Cyangugu at the southern shores of Lake Kivu – visit to the famous bridge to Bukavu in the Democratic Republic of Congo that became a symbol of hope for hundreds of thousands of refugees – drive to Nyungwe National Park in the south-west of Rwanda

Day 10:
Hiking in Nyungwe National Park, the largest mountainous forest in the whole region of Central and East Africa with impressive flora and fauna – drive to Butare, Rwanda’s cultural centre – visit to the National Museum – performance of a local dance group

Day 11:
Drive to Nyanza, the historical seat of the ancient Rwandan kings – visit to the Palace and narration of some village elders – drive to
Kigali – tour of the city

Day 12:
Drive to Akagera National Park in the east of Rwanda – safari in the most complex savannah ecosystem of East Africa with impressive landscape, extraordinary birdlife and the occasional big game animals – activities around the lakes in the Park (e.g. canoeing, fishing) – optional camping in/around the Park or drive back to Kigali

Day 13:
Drive to Rwamagana – visit to local handicraft production project that is supported by international development agencies (e.g. the German DED) – insights into the development work – drive to Kigali – afternoon at own convenience – early evening performance of members of a Batwa Pottery Project with an introduction to the life of the first Rwandans, there art of pottery as well as singing, drumming and dancing

Day 14:
Personal good-bye and, as far as possible, more optional short excursions to nearby attractions such as genocide memorial sites or lively markets in Kigali’s suburbs

Exemplary prices:
An all-inclusive trip for a group of 4 persons, where 2 persons share a double room each, would cost around US$ 2,095 per person if all accommodation is in the budget range. At least 9 of the 13 overnight stays can be offered in upmarket accommodation (4* international standard) – then the trip would cost around US$ 2,435 per person.

Rwanda's first exclusive Community-based Tourism experience (4 days)

Day 1:

  • Arrival in Ruhengeri shortly after lunch, meet personal guide (Greg) and check into the private family home
  • Afternoon drive to Lake Burera where an exciting experience with a traditional dugout canoe is waiting
  • Visit to a community on Birwa Island, introduction to the local school, conversation with some locals who are eager to share about their living culture
  • Return to Ruhengeri, dinner and overnight in a private family home

Day 2:

  • Visit to a traditional village healer and his medical garden: the village doctor plays a very important role in the community as he treats diseases and educates the local people about the benefits of certain plants and animals; almost 91% of Rwandans still depend on the traditional medicines
  • Walk around Lake Ruhondo in order to discover the life of the adjacent communities, and visit of the Rwaza Orphanage Centre: the Centre offers the opportunity to learn more about Rwanda’s history and its current situation, as many of the children living here are orphans from families who have become victims of the genocide – either directly or indirectly through rape and the spread of HIV/AIDS
  • Afternoon experience with village women and possibility to learn about Rwandan cooking methods and local dishes: opportunity to become involved in the food preparation for dinner
  • Dinner and overnight in a private family home

Day 3:

  • Visit to a local crafts workshop and introduction to traditional handicrafts and their production: insights into the traditional skills and colours that are important in the everyday life of Rwandan communities
  • Afternoon visit to the Ruhengeri Women’s Association, an organised group of town women who have started to develop special activities for tourism purposes, an alternative mean of income generation for them and their families
  • Dinner and overnight in a private family home

Day 4:

  • Experience with local banana beer brewing, a traditional activity of great social importance in the village life: introduction to the various banana species and the many ways how they are used, ranging from simply eating the fruits to the production of thirst quenching beer – a fascinating process to watch, taste and enjoy
  • End of service around lunch time

Day 1:

Drive to Nyanza, the historical seat of the ancient Rwandan kings – first impressions of Rwanda, the “Land of a Thousand Hills” – visit to the Palace and narration of some village elders – drive to Butare, Rwanda’s cultural centre – visit to the National Museum – performance of a local dance group

Day 3:
Drive to Nyungwe National Park in the south-west of Rwanda – hiking in the largest mountainous forest in the whole region of Central and East Africa with impressive flora and fauna – drive to Cyangugu at the southern shores of Lake Kivu

Day 4:
Boat trip to Kibuye at the eastern shores of Lake Kivu – visit to a large church which serves as a peaceful reminder of the genocide – discovery tour on the lake with exploration of the lake’s flora and fauna – visit to the islands “Napoleon’s Hat” and “Amahoro” (Island of Peace) – cosy evening at the shores of the lake

Day 5:
Drive to Kigali – tour of the city with visit to the central market and the lively Muslim quarter – optional visit to a genocide memorial site or afternoon at own convenience – early evening performance of members of a Batwa Pottery Project with an introduction to the life of the first Rwandans, there art of pottery as well as singing, drumming and dancing

Day 6:
Personal good-bye and, as far as possible, more optional short excursions to nearby attractions

Rwanda Module 3: Pure Nature (6 days)

Day 1:
Arrival in Kigali – getting to know your tour guide – walk in Kigali

Day 2:
Early drive to Ruhengeri in the North – first trekking in the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park and visit to one of the last mountain gorilla families in the world, one of the absolute highlights in the lives of many nature lovers – optional visit to a group of local witch doctors and fortune tellers as well as the “snake man”

Day 3:
Optional second trekking in Volcanoes National Park and visit to another mountain gorilla family, or visit to the bamboo forests in which the rare and shy Golden Monkey lives, or visit to the Karisoke Research Centre for mountain gorillas and volcanic flora and fauna – drive Gisenyi at the northern shores of Lake Kivu – optional African party or romantic evening at the lake

Day 4:
Boat trip to Kibuye at the eastern shores of Lake Kivu – discovery tour on the lake with exploration of the lake’s flora and fauna – visit to the island “Napoleon’s Hat” and its giant bat colony – boat trip to Cyangugu at the southern shores of Lake Kivu – drive to Nyungwe National Park in the south-west of Rwanda

Day 5:
Hiking in Nyungwe National Park, the largest mountainous forest in the whole region of Central and East Africa with impressive flora and fauna (13 different primate species, 300 bird species including 25 regional endemics, more than 250 tree species and hundreds of flour species including more than 100 different orchids) – drive to Kigali – performance of members of a Batwa Pottery Project with an introduction to the life of the first Rwandans, there art of pottery as well as singing, drumming and dancing

Day 6:
Personal good-bye and, as far as possible, more optional short excursions to nearby attractions such as genocide memorial sites or lively markets in Kigali’s suburbs

Exemplary prices:
An all-inclusive trip for a group of 4 persons, where 2 persons share a double room each, would cost around US$ 1,625 per person if all accommodation is in the budget range and 2 gorilla visits are desired (US$ 1,250 if only 1 gorilla visit is desired).
